British Columbia is rich in abandoned railway corridors. Over the past 15 years, the Province has been acquiring abandoned corridors for conversion to a world-class recreation trail system. The Spirit of 2010 Trail is a network of five abandoned rail corridors stretching across southern British Columbia and Vancouver Island, linking 18 communities: the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, Slocan Rail Trail, Columbia and Western Rail Trail, Cowichan Rail Trail, and the Great Northern Rail Trail. These trails provide outstanding venues for hiking, walking, cycling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and, where approved by local communities, snowmobiling.

The Spirit of 2010 Trail is intimately linked with the Trans Canada Trail (TCT). BC’s portion of the TCT extends from the southern tip of Vancouver Island to the BC/Alberta border. The 2000-kilometre long BC portion of the TCT includes four sections of the Spirit of 2010 Trail, as well as community and regional trails, BC Parks trails, community pathways, and forest roads.
