  • Site Description:Summer hiking distance: 6 km . Elevation gain: 435m. More than half of this route is poorly defined requiring creek crossings and travel over sections of large rock faces. Access to Catamount Glacier to Olive Hut begins along this route. The west route along the main Forster valley continues to Thunderwater and Whirlpool Lakes. Forster Creek Winter Snowmobile trail - Thunderwater/Whirlpool Lakes: Very popular alpine meadows with advanced riding to scenic Thunderwater and Whirlpool Lakes. The Windermere Valley Snowmobile Society grooms the trail and road in. The Forster Creek meadows, lakes, Forster Pass and slopes to the north are open to snowmobiling. Riders should be aware of avalanche hazard areas, some of which are at km 41 and 42 and at the headwall below Thunderwater Lake. Note that Catamount and North Star Glaciers are closed to snowmobiling above and south of Forster Creek meadows. Please refer to posted signs and the Winter Recreation 1999 map/brochure.

  • Driving Directions:Driving time from Radium to summer trailhead: 1.5 hours. Drive west along the Forster's Landing Road past the sawmill. The road is now called the Horsethief Forest Service Road. Drive throught the four corner junction at the 9 km mark, turn right at the 14 km mark onto the Forster Creek Forest Service road. Stay on this road until roads end at the 42 km mark. Winter - Dogleg Lake parking: From Radium follow the Horsethief Forest Service Road west. Turn right at the 9km four corners junction onto Westside Road. Park on the left at the 21km mark. Winter- Forster Creek Parking: Take the Horsethief Forest Service Road from Radium past the four corner junction at the 9 km mark. At the 14 km mark turn right onto the Forster Creek Road and park past the water intake at the 19km mark. From Invermere drive the Westside Road for 16.5 kms to the four corner junction with the Horsethief Forest Service Road. From this junction weither stay staright to get to the 21km Dogleg lake parking lot; or turn left onto the Horsethief Road to get to the Forster Creek parking area. A right turn at the 14 km mark onto the Forster Creek Road will then take you past the water reservoir to the parking lot at the 19 km mark .
